1st Place:
House by Gracyn G., 10th grade, Twin Hickory Library

Bricks for fingernails and lights for eyes. Ribs of weathered wood groan and splinter as he grows, twisting, popping into place. Knuckles sprout grass, skin unravels to wallpaper, kneecaps split into wooden porch steps, familiar and inviting. He lays down by the road, alone, and names himself abandoned.

2nd Place:
Alzheimer’s by Grace M.,  10th grade, Dumbarton Library

“Wrong number, sir.”

He hung up, for the fifth time in a row. “Dammit,” he muttered to himself. He had to make this call. Dialing another number, he waited in apprehension.

“Dad?”

“…I love you.”

“I know.”

“I have to tell you, before I start forgetting.”

“It isn’t your fault.”

3rd Place ( two stories tied for 3rd place):
Untitled by Miranda J., 10th grade, Twin Hickory Library

She’s out riding that old Schwinn bike with the bell and basket ornaments that make a girl feel confident about herself. She knew every contour of the pavement like a lover. The boys followed her around the cul-de-sac but they could never kiss her like the pavement does.

3rd Place ( two stories tied for 3rd place):
Squandered Life by Alex S., 7th grade, Twin Hickory Library

“Hoot. Hoot.” There’s an owl out my window. He’s grasping a note in his talons. I grab the message from the owl. It’s in code!? I devote my life to deciphering it. Then, in the last seconds of my life, I realize it said, “Hoot. Hoot.”

Congratulations to all our winners!
