Teen Review– Prince of Shadows by Rachel Caine

[Cover]

This book takes place in Verona, with the conflict of two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, following the well known and loved story of Romeo and Juliet. Written from the perspective of Benvolio Montague, Romeo’s cousin, it follows Benvolio’s journey as the Prince of Shadows, a Robin Hood-like figure who steals from others for justice. He gets wrapped up in the affairs of some of the well known characters, such as Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, sworn lovers divided by hate, Tybalt, Juliet’s rude and angry cousin, Mercutio, close friend of Benvolio and Romeo, and Rosaline Capulet, Tybalt’s wise and studious sister. As the danger and romance that surrounds them all begins to unfold, these two houses must end their quarrel, or they all may pay the price.

I think this book is a must read for anyone who enjoys a fast paced novel or an all around great read. Packed with action, adventure, romance, tragedy, and a hint of the magical, Prince of Shadows is sure to amaze readers of all ages. I particularly liked the way that used the original story of Romeo and Juliet as a background for another similar story, and to tell all the untold events of the famous play. This creates a more modern and equally enticing story of love and hate, life and death, but with a much easier and reader friendly writing style. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique and brilliant story to read.

I found it really memorable in how the author was able to modernize and elaborate the Shakespearean story in such a way that it creates a whole new and unique story within the original. It makes it a great read that can stand alone even if you don’t know anything about Romeo and Juliet.
