Teen Review — Surfacing by Nora Raleigh Baskin

Maggie Paris swims on the varsity swim team. Swimming was a brave thing to do for Maggie because her older sister, Leah, drowned. It changed her life forever, and it took a long time for Maggie to start getting used to water. Even though her life seems back to normal, it’s not. She can get people to tell their deepest secrets, but this ability makes people shy away from her. Her parents have been fighting lately, and things haven’t been the same.

This book was very detailed and interesting. Maggie was a brave character because she swam a lot even though her sister drowned. I thought that she also stayed strong even when things wouldn’t turn out the way they were planned. She kept on trying because she believed in herself, and she never gave up. Overall, the book left me wanting more.

One thing that stuck with me throughout the book was the fact that Maggie always stayed brave even when tough decisions came along.

four stars
